Enables for-profit and nonprofit gift planners to find their place at the table where wealthy families plan their philanthropy for positive impact on both the family and society. The course considers the various roles gift planners play; what it means to be a CAP®; the role of wealth and philanthropy in successful families; planning for social impact; youth giving; and how to market philanthropic advisory services to specific niches. The course includes a comprehensive case study showing financial planning, estate planning, business exit planning and philanthropic planning. The course includes a comprehensive study guide with readings from both the liberal arts and the financial sciences of gift planning. Note: this is a new course, being launched April 1, 2010.

Focuses on understanding philanthropy as a core component of comprehensive financial and estate planning for donors/clients. Examines strategic uses of charitable gifts and planning in helping donors and clients reach their charitable and personal goals. Looks at significant legal doctrines on using charitable strategies as part of donor planning, as well as issues presented by particular assets. The course provides the background needed for nonprofit professionals and for-profit advisors to meet at the planning table with a shared technical background. The course includes a comprehensive study guide with readings drawn from philanthropic and financial journals.

- Gift Planning in a Nonprofit Context
Required
Focused on “planned giving,” the course enables nonprofit and for-profit gift planners to collaborate in raising significant gifts from prospects. Topics include: the status of planned giving as a profession; the role of a board in governing a nonprofit; traditional philosophies of planned giving; the emerging “consultative” philosophy of trusted advisors; the legal framework within which planned giving is done; how planned gifts are counted and administered; how advisors and nonprofit professionals can partner for optimal donor/client outcomes; and the ethics and ideals of the gift planning professions. The course contains a comprehensive study guide with contemporary readings from gift planning, financial and estate planning journals.
